Just when we thought the last federal polls of 2024 had been released, and that this final (and short) week of the parliamentary session in Ottawa would conclude without a fuss or a bang, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland's resignation shook the pillars of Ottawa on Monday morning. So much so that Abacus Data, which had just released federal figures on Sunday, returned to the field to gauge the pulse of the Canadian electorate in the wake of this bombshell.

While the new Abacus national figures did not move outside the previous poll’s margin of error, they align with trends observed in recent months. In short, the incumbent Liberals, if they cannot reverse these trends in time for the next election, are headed for a historic defeat.
