Royal Shrug
Canadians are unmoved by the royal visit—and hold King Charles in low regard, according to a new poll from the Angus Reid Institute.
King Charles III, the theoretical head of state of England and other Commonwealth countries, is in Ottawa today and tomorrow for a brief visit. On Tuesday morning, he will read the Throne Speech of Mark Carney’s new government, officially launching the first parliamentary session of the 45th Canadian Parliament.
While the royal visit has received wall-to-wall media coverage, a new poll from the Angus Reid Institute suggests most Canadians are far from thrilled. In fact, most Canadians from coast to coast are indifferent to the King’s arrival. Among the poll’s entire sample, 17% expressed excitement towards the royal visit, against 83% who feel indifference. Breaking the results by regions of the country, we see little variations: Excitement (if you can call it that) is highest in Ontario with 21%, and lowest in Quebec with 10%.
