Poilievre Retains High Favourability from CPC voters
A new Angus Reid poll finds strong early approval for Mark Carney, while Pierre Poilievre remains deeply popular with Conservative voters despite his party’s defeat.
A new federal poll from the Angus Reid Institute (ARI) measured public approval of Mark Carney’s early days as Prime Minister, along with favourability ratings for the main party leaders in Ottawa. The top takeaways? Carney is clearly enjoying a honeymoon phase—and despite his party’s loss in April’s general election, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre remains highly popular among his base.
Let’s start with Pierre Poilievre.
To the question: “Do you have an overall favourable or unfavourable view of Pierre Poilievre – leader of the Conservative Party of Canada?”, 39% of respondents answered either “very favourable” (18%) or “favourable” (21%). On the flip side, 57% said they view him unfavourably, including 41% who chose “very unfavourable”—for a net favourability of -18. According to ARI, these numbers are consistent with where Poilievre stood at the end of the campaign.
Poilievre’s numbers break even among men (net -1), but he faces a steep gender gap, with a dismal net favourability of -34 among women. Across all age groups, his unfavourables exceed the 50% mark.
