Léger: Canadians Were Already Wary of Trump in October
Imagine what the results would be today.
In the final stretch of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Léger polled Canadians to measure their perceptions of the main candidates. The survey found that a majority of Canadian voters—across all age groups, genders, and regions—expressed a preference for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.
Given the events of recent weeks that have further strained Canada-U.S. relations, it may be worth revisiting the findings of this poll. Léger surveyed a representative sample of 1,562 Canadian voters from its internet panel between October 18 and 21, 2024.
To the question: “In your view, what is the best outcome for Canada as a whole in this U.S. election?” 62% of Canadians said a Harris victory would be preferable, compared to 20% who favoured Donald Trump.
Breaking the results down by voting intentions, the data revealed a sharp divide among Canadian conservatives. Among CPC voters, 42% believed a Trump victory would be best for Canada, while the exact same proportion—42%—chose Harris.
Among Liberal, NDP, and Bloc voters, the results showed a Harris landslide.
