Despite Stable Personal Finances, Canadians' Economic Pessimism Endures
New Léger poll shows Canadians worried about economic growth, health care, and relations with the United States.
New polling conducted by Léger looked at how Canadians are feeling about their personal finances, the state of the national economy, and which issues they consider most pressing.
On the household finance front, most Canadians (53%) say they expect their finances to stay largely the same. This represents a modest recovery from 49% in mid-2025, though expectations remain well below a high of 63% recorded in 2021, roughly a year after the pandemic began.
Meanwhile, 23% of Canadians say they expect their finances to decline over the next few months, while 16% believe their situation will improve.
Canadians are far more pessimistic when it comes to the broader economy. Polling has long shown a disconnect between how Canadians feel about their own finances and how they assess the country’s economic outlook—a gap that persists in Léger’s latest poll, even if it has narrowed slightly.
