338 Year-End Note: Thank You
As we wrap 2025, a warm thank-you to readers and subscribers — and a look ahead to a packed 2026 in Canadian politics.
This is the 218th and final post of the 338Canada newsletter in 2025.
Before we close the year, I want to thank every one of you — subscribers, casual readers, commenters, and those who share my work with friends and colleagues. Times are tough for many Canadians (we see the polls…), and the fact that so many of you take time to read these updates — and that many of you chip in to support this second career of mine — is more than I could ever have asked for. Thank you. Truly.
It’s my intention to keep providing data-based analysis of Canadian politics throughout 2026 and beyond, as long as you’ll have me. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart. ♥️
And there will be a lot to deconstruct right out of the gate in the new year:
A leadership vote on Pierre Poilievre at the CPC convention in Calgary (in late January);
The Quebec Liberals launching yet another leadership race (vote in March);
The federal NDP choosing a permanent leader (also in March, in Winnipeg);
Provincial governments entering their fourth year in power could get the snap-election itch… (eyes on you, Alberta and Manitoba 👀);
The Ontario Liberals searching for a new leader to replace the departing Bonnie Crombie;
The British Columbia Conservatives will elect a new leader to replace John Rustad;
Other leadership races in Atlantic Canada: the PEI Progressive Conservatives, and the Nova Scotia Liberals later in 2026;
…and, of course, a scheduled Quebec general election next fall (October 5) — one unlike any we’ve seen in at least a generation. More on than soon.
I’m probably forgetting a few things, but I think the point is clear: we’ll have our hands full in 2026. And I’ll be here to provide numbers, context, and analysis every step of the way.
🎙️The Numbers will return in January
Eric Grenier and I will continue recording The Numbers and Les chiffres throughout 2026 — and yes, I will keep trying to write quizzes that make Eric sweat a little.
Our final episodes of 2025 were our traditional Over/Under challenge, where we make forced predictions for the year ahead. We enjoy these tremendously.
Here is the federal episode:
Here is the provincial episode:
So let me end with this:
Happy New Year! I wish you all health, love, and happiness during this next spin around the sun.🍁

One significant event in 2026 , although not strictly Canadian are the mid term elections in the U.S. which will have a significant impact on Canada and Canadian politics.
Merci Philippe (et Eric). Vous m'avez aidé a ne pas perdre la raison pendant cette année horrible.
