338 Sunday Update: Troubled Waters Ahead for Mark Carney
As trade tensions with United States rise, the Prime Minister will soon face his first true test of voter patience at home.
Good afternoon, dear 338Canada readers,
There was no shortage of federal news last week as the trade dispute between Canada and the U.S. ratcheted up another few notches. The U.S. president grew angry and imposed new tariffs on Canadian goods — in other words, higher taxes for American consumers — for, well, reasons. (At first it was fentanyl, then a “porous” border, now an Ontario government ad. Who knows what’s next.)
On the polling front, we saw new federal numbers from Nanos Research and EKOS, fresh Ontario data from Abacus, and a detailed Quebec sovereignty survey from Léger — with little good news for the Yes camp as we approach the 30th anniversary of the 1995 Quebec referendum (brace yourself for a wave of nostalgia in Quebec media this week).
Let’s recap and break it all down. Welcome to the 338 Sunday Update.
